What Is So Important About the Timing Belt?

Of all the belts that transfer power from one place to another in your car’s engine, the timing belt is the most important. When the timing belt breaks, parts inside your engine collide, and your engine stops, sometimes in the middle of an intersection. When one of your other belts breaks, such as the serpentine belt, auxiliary parts stop working.

The crankshaft turns when your piston is driven by the force of the combustion in your engine. The crankshaft is attached to the camshaft which times the opening and closing of the valves along the piston’s up and down route so that the valve is closed at the time the piston passes. When the timing belt slips or breaks, this timing is interrupted so that the piston runs into open valves causing major damage.

At Diablo Subaru of Walnut Creek in Walnut Creek, CA, we check your timing belt at every service.
